Why Become an Official?

Give Back to the Game

Officials play a vital role in high school athletics. Your presence on the field or court ensures fair competition and teaches student-athletes the value of rules and sportsmanship.

Flexible Schedule

Officiating fits around your existing commitments. Most assignments are evenings and weekends during the sport's season, giving you control over how much you work.

Earn Extra Income

Officials are compensated for each game they work. As you gain experience and advance in rating, your earning potential increases.

Ongoing Development

The LHSOA and its local associations provide clinics, rules training, and mentorship to help you grow as an official at every level.

How to Get Started

  1. 1

    Contact a Local Association

Officiating is organized through local officials associations recognized by the LHSAA. Reach out to the association in your area for the sport you want to officiate.

  2. 2

    Complete Registration

Register with the LHSAA as an official. You will need to complete the required paperwork and pay any applicable registration fees.

  3. 3

    Attend a Clinic

New officials are required to attend a rules clinic for their sport. Clinics cover rules knowledge, mechanics, and game management.

  4. 4

    Pass the Rules Exam

All officials must pass an annual rules examination administered by the LHSAA. Study materials are provided through your local association and the LHSAA.

  5. 5

    Start Working Games

Once registered and certified, your local association will begin assigning you to games. New officials typically start with sub-varsity assignments.
